Original Toronto Star caption: At come-by-chance; a Newfoundland outport; lobsterman Jim Pevie goes about his work in much the same fashion as men of the area have done for more than 200 years. These outports are usually at the head of long coves because merchants of the 1600s forced a colonial ruling that settlers must live at least six miles from the sea. By building on the coves the early immigrants stayed six miles from the actual sea?but still kept access to it by water so that they could make their living as fishermen.

Futures trading in currencies and commodities has paid off handsomely for fomer Windsor high school teacher Jim Carroll, who parlayed $750 into more than $150,000. His new wealth, he says, means he might just play chess for a year in 1974. Here he is enjoying a game with wife Mary Pat. Worldwide shortages have made commodity futures a fertile area for speculation, Carroll points out.

Just park it: Greg Cotreau doesn't have much time for long-distance bicycle riding any more. That's because he's too busy spreading the word about the bicycle storage system his business is built around. The device was designed by a retired RCMP sergeant, Terry Smith, and it promises to end the clutter of bikes parked every which way.

Showing how his wares work - almost all at the same time - is Ballon King Otto Bishof. He estimates he'll sell about 50,000 balloons and about 30,000 party hats, horns, noise-makers, bells and whistles to bring in the New Year. After 11 years in the business, he says he still has a lot of fun. Bischof also rents out canisters of helium gas to fill balloons, and he and staff also decorate some hotels for the festivities.
