With the shipping season on Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence Seaway expected to end in about three weeks; Toronto harbor is experiencing a last minute rush of ocean-going ships. One of the busiest docks in Pier 53 where large quantities of steel; shown here; are being unloaded from freighters. Seaway will officially close Dec. 17 although if mild weather continues; it may stay open a few days longer.

Anchor aground: An old anchor looms in the foreground and mist rises off the water as Toronto harbor gets an early foretaste of the quiet days of winter. The harbor was busier this year than last; but things slow down to a crawl when winter really takes hold and the St. Lawrence Seaway and Welland Canal close for the season. Shipping usually stops at the end of December.
