Original Toronto Star caption: The United Appeal campaign begins. Arlene Day; 18; Miss United Appeal of 167; lights the appeal's 1968 symbolic flame in front of old city hall while finalists for the 1968 title look on. The campaign was officially lauched in Nathan Phillips Square by releasing balloons representing the 78 agencies that will share the $11;300;000 hoped for.

Cool cash representing the United Way's $16.2 million goal surrounds campaign chairman William Christener deep in vaults of a Metro Bank. There is is folks . . . that's exactly what we need. Let's go out and get it, Christener said as he kicked off campaign early yesterday for the media. Official appeal kick-off starts tomorrow at 11 a.m. at Nathan Phillips Square and you're invited.
