Anchor aground: An old anchor looms in the foreground and mist rises off the water as Toronto harbor gets an early foretaste of the quiet days of winter. The harbor was busier this year than last; but things slow down to a crawl when winter really takes hold and the St. Lawrence Seaway and Welland Canal close for the season. Shipping usually stops at the end of December.

Solid handlwork: Art Cooke spent the summer of '45 chiseling mortar off old bricks to build the home he and his wife still live in on Burnett Ave. Today, a high-rise looms near the site he bought for $350. Above, Cooke admires the sturdy bricks he bought for $352 and hauled in a rented truck from the Swift meatpacking plant.
