Original Toronto Star caption: Distinguished Canadian painter; author and scholar Barker Fairley; who will be 89 in May; has been honored with his first one-man show in New York cty; opening today at the Touchstone Gallery; 118 E. 64th St. Fairley has been exhibiting his work steadily for a decade; usually painting three or four mornings a week in the sunlit front room of his Willcocks Ave. home. An early champion and confidant of the Group of Seven; Fairley was nearly 45 when he was urged by poet-painter Robert Finch to paint his own pictures. The New York Show is an exhibition of landscapes and portraits and runs until March 27. Fairley's A Study of Goethe (1947) is a classic work of Goethe criticism and remains an essential study of the German poet's work.
