Original Toronto Star caption: The field in the Canadian Oaks at Woodbine last Saturday was racing along the backstretch about the three-eights pole when Avelino Gomez' mount, Swisskin, suddenly snapped a hind leg, spilling the 51-year-old jockey, who died about three hours later on the operating table at Etobicoke General Hospital. As Swisskin goes down, Gomez is smashed to the ground by Lacey, ridden by David Clark, while Solartic, right, sprints clear and Avenare (blinkers, left) and Cherry Berry come up behind.
