Running a railroad, even if it's government-owned, means behaving like a business. Jean Cormier, vice-president of public relations for Canadian National, says many people don't understand that. Cormier said that because of its government association, many people view the railway as inefficient, bureaucratic, wasteful. CN is out to change that, although it has many problems because it still is an Ottawa-operated and deficit-plagued entity.

The Garys. Promoters. Ten years along, Gary Cormier and Gary Topp (in photo at right) - a/k/a The Garys - are still flinty pioneers in the high-mortality field of concert promotion. Legendary for their early shows with The Police, including a gig at the Horseshoe Tavern that has swelled to near-mythic status, Cormier and Topp still take chances on great unknowns while hoisting the banner for enduring punks such as Iggy Pop and The Ramones. These adult students, who are studying the sociology of social change, are not only studying the theory but becoming involved in social change themselves. Their class project this winter is to go out into the community and try to persuade people who never thought they could attend university that they possibly could. It has to be widened, says Metro traffic commissioner Sam Cass of the Don Valley Parkway as he stands on footbridge crossing it at Riverdale Zoo. Planners estimate it will cost $15 million to widen parkway an extra two lanes, and it's not the right solution adds Cass. In addition, two other street widening programs will cost another $9 million. Cass blames halting of the Spadina Expressway.
