Top teacher: I was totally surprised when they told me, says Ken Brown, 39, after being named science teacher of the year by the Toronto chapters of a Sigma XI, a scientific research society with chapters all over North America. Brown, head of physics at North York's George S. Henry Secondary School, is the first to receive the honor at the high school level.

In a rare bit of scientific detective work, phyicists at Ontario Research Foundation in Sheridan Park proved Canada's 1855 black 12-penny stamp was used in a mailing from Hamilton to England in 1855, boosting its value from about $3,000 to anywhere from $25,000 to $40,000 for owner, a British collector. Principal scientist in applied physics, Eric Chatfield shows enlargement of letter.
