Original Toronto Star caption: The noonday gun firing in Ottawa is one of our most traditional ceremonies. The man who carries it out is J. M. Desjardins. He shows up each day half an hour before noon to place a charge of gunpower in the ancient muzzle-loading cannon. Then he tunes in to the National Research Council time signal and detonates exactly at noon. The blast is loud enough to knock nearby children on the seat of their pants.
