The cardinal was chosen as the Library symbol because many of these birds inhabited the nearby don Valley. The original log of the East York Public Library shown on the front of the card was designed by the noted Canadian artist and graphic designer, Thoreau MacDonald. It was the official logo from 1950-1991.
The new logo shown on the back of the card was designed by staff member Cheryl Britton. It was used from 1991 to 1997.
