Original Toronto Star caption: Lake season opens. Capt. Raymond Boudreault of the Oil Transport gets the traditional top hat from the Harbor Commission's Capt. John Mann as the first ship of the season to move in Toronto Harbor. It was the first time since 1861 the hat went to the skipper of an outgoing vessel.

Anchor aground: An old anchor looms in the foreground and mist rises off the water as Toronto harbor gets an early foretaste of the quiet days of winter. The harbor was busier this year than last; but things slow down to a crawl when winter really takes hold and the St. Lawrence Seaway and Welland Canal close for the season. Shipping usually stops at the end of December.
