Original Toronto Star caption: A man - made beach doesn't necessarily have to be a disaster as this stretch of palm-decorated sand at the Sea winds Hotel; now called Go Bananas; demonstrates. The club is one of five that have sprung up in Jamaica in little over a year; four of them taking over and giving new life to hotels that were closed in the wake of a slump in tourism. The clubs offer a casual; free holiday that according to some tourism experts is much closer to the true spirit of island living than conventional resort hotels offer.

Horticulturist Andrew Benn of Scarborough waters plants in his exotic tropical greenhouse where he grows sugar cane, orchids, pineapples and bananas along with regular vegetables. The native of Guyana is teaching courses on indoor and outdoor gardening for beginners and advanced gardeners. His classroom is his greenhouse in his backyard on Vauxhall Dr. Classes started today and will run for 8 weeks.
